Maria L. Baldwin Community Center’s art studio building is named after the noted American abstract expressionist and Cambridge resident Maud Morgan. We own a collection of her original screenprints and works on paper, which are available for exhibition and sale with all proceeds supporting our programs and scholarships.

Maud Morgan was a talented and well-known artist, as well as a Baldwin neighborhood resident. Before settling in Cambridge, Maud was born in New York City in 1903 and spent much of her early life studying in Paris and traveling throughout Europe. While living abroad, she met American artist Patrick Morgan, who became her husband in 1931 and inspired her to take up painting. In 1938, she showed her first-ever exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Soon after, she and Patrick moved to Massachusetts where Maud would remain for the rest of her life.

While living in Andover, Maud became an art teacher at Abbot Academy and continued to grow as an artist and show her own work in the Boston area. Throughout her career, Maud was a source of inspiration for dozens of artists, both young and old. For women artists, in particular, she served as a role model. She encouraged them to pursue their careers without foregoing the privilege and pleasure of family life. Her joie de vivre was infectious and touched the lives of all who knew her. At the age of ninety-two, still vigorous and eager to explore yet another medium of expression, Maud published her autobiography, Maud’s Journey: A Life from Art.

We opened our art center in 2010 and named it after Maud Morgan with the intent to build community through the visual arts. Our studios are focused on the philosophy of process art making, experimentation, and skill development for artists of all ages and abilities. We envision a world where all people are enriched by the visual arts and inspired to explore their own creativity. While Maud passed away in 1999 at the age of 96 and never got to see the art center come to life, her spirit continues to inspire and guide artists of all ages in the Maud Morgan Arts Center.

All prints were created between 1969 and 1980 at Impressions Workshop in Boston. All prints are signed by the artist. We have a limited number of each print.

All proceeds from sales of Maud Morgan’s prints support programs and scholarships at the Maria L. Baldwin Community Center. They do not qualify as a charitable contribution. Please contact us for price and availability. A few prints are already framed.

If you wish to have your print framed, we suggest you contact Stanhope Framers with locations in Boston and Somerville. We will send the print to them for framing, and they will ship the print to you, or you can make private arrangements.
